Adding a PDF or document file to the dropdown menus in WordPress takes a few steps but is fairly quick and simple once you have done it a few times. The basic steps of this are:

  1. Upload the PDF to the media library
  2. Copy the URL for the path to the file in the media library
  3. Add a Link to the menu or update an existing one with that file path

The following screenshots outline in detail the process of adding or changing a link to a pdf in a WordPress dropdown menu.

01 – Open WordPress Media Library and Add New

02 – Select pdf files from your harddrive

03 – The file will upload (crunching)

04 – Once upload complete click edit link

05 – Highlight and copy the File URL

If there is already a PDF link in your WordPress menu that you want to update rather than adding a new link then skip to Step 11 and change the existing link details.

06 – Click the links tab

07 – Link adding to menu box

08 – Paste in the File URL from before

09 – Type a link name and Add to Menu

10 – Drag menu item into position

If you are happy with the position of the link and don’t need to make any further changes to the link name then you can now click Save Menu and exit.

11 – If PDF link is already in the menu click it

12 – Replace old link with new PDF link

13 – Save Menu changes
